Teddy Bears & Poetry

By Gregory Bear

What about some ‘Bear Poetry’? Well, I’ve had a look inside my human mum’s library of bear books. Here are some quotations from English and American authors contributions to teddy bear poetry:

You don’t have particularly to emphasize teddy bears being something very special. Teddy bears are all around us since about 100 years by now. During this quite long term he never lost his popularity. At any time during the first five years in its childhood, nearly every child in the western hemisphere is getting a teddy bear as a present. A very special toy for being fond of.

In the early days of teddy bears existence people said that teddy bears are boys toys. In their opinion a teddy should be able to satisfy a boy’s necessities, for which girls used their dolls. But girls and boys during all times until now are fall-ing in love with teddy bears! Some special humans never will lose this affection in their whole life time.
Josa Keys / English author

Not anybody is able to listen as patient and unprejudiced like a teddy bear.
Bo Niles / American author

Long before I was grown up, my teddy bear taught me all about real love: that is to be around, when you are needed the most.
Jim Nelson / American author

No other animal was loved as much as a teddy bear: stories about affection and kindness, steadfastness, character and taking care for others. In short all these virtues we all appreciate, knowing they are well-meant, desiring we had these abilities and skills, too.
Michael Bond / English author

Bears are making your life also easy. They are remarkable companions when you are alone.
Nesta Wynn Ellis / English Teddy Bear Collector

I was designed by Carol-Lynn Rössel-Waugh for ‘Russ Berrie’ Ltd, as a plate fixed to my body said. Here is something she said:

‘ A teddy bear becomes a work of art himself, only by being unusual, in my opinion through his facial expression. He must radiate a special something in his eyes, touching the viewer’s soul.’

Let’s go to the nearest mirror…look yourself deep into the eyes…? Yeah! I am sure we ALL got IT… this special look, overwhelming the humans we have cho-sen to share our lives with! But only in their opinion they choose US. Only we teddy bears are knowing the truth, keeping this secret deep inside our beary, brave hearts.

Yours Greg

A POEM FOR THE PLANET

When sun should shine it's often wet
And rainclouds fill the sky
When snow should fall the air is clear
All bears are asking why

Instead of snoozing in the fall
Which is the normal way
A bear can still be wide awake
Til after Christmas Day

And Spring comes bursting through in March
You've barely had a rest
When it is time to rise again
And head off on your quest

Some say the humans are to blame
For fouling up our land
With gases from their industry
And oil made from our sand

There is no doubt the ozone's broke
And weather's getting crazy
But humans will not change their ways
I think because they're lazy

Around the Arctic once quite chill
Where polar bears do play
Their homes are slowly falling down
As ice caps melt away

So smart custodians of the earth
The bears all want to know
When will you humans pack your bags
Realize it's time to go

Heh! Heh!

A poem for Snuffy Norton-Bearmani

by Michael Duck

Along came a bear all dapper and fine
Dressed in the best the fabrics entwined
With gold and silver and all of the best
Resources and love I do not jest

The House of Bearmani a label so bold
The clothes they produce just never get old
Or tired, just worn and they stand out proud
Cause dressed in the best you stand out from the crowd

And the maker behind this empire of silk
Our friend Snuffy (dressed in a Kilt)
Or you may see him on his sofa at home
In his dressing gown measuring up for a Gnome

As he dresses all sorts, no matter how big or how small
Or how common or posh, for shopping or Ball
He made me some shorts for surfin the web
And you all know my butt is shaped for an egg

It’s not easy dressing a duck
But this lucky duck was up on his luck
So I can never rate Snuffy up high enough
Cause finding clothes for a fluffy is just too tough

But give him your numbers and watch as he spins
The magic and sweat and your clothes begins
To take shape and in perfect harmony
This is the Magic of our Bearmani.

THE BALLAD OF VIKING JOE

Written for Rufti Tufti Joe Soap

Viking Joe was a fearless foe
The scourge of sea and land.
With his flaming red hair and a terrifying stare -
He was the leader of a fearsome Viking band.

One day whilst on the pillage In a rather far off village,
He came across a fresh baked Narner tart.
Baked by a pretty lady bear with a ribbon in her hair,
Twas the moment Viking Joe just lost his heart!

Transfixed by her beauty, he clear forgot his Viking duty
And the wench in turn began to swoon and sigh,
But his bandidos, keen as mustard, Commandeered the custard
Which caused the pretty ladybear to cry.

Joe's heart was torn asunder at the horror of this blunder.
For a moment he stood there all perplexed.
Then he took a great deep breath, let out a snarl that threatened death
And said to his bandidos ‘Lads, I’m vexed!’

As his lady stood there sobbing, Viking Joe said ‘No more robbing,
From now on I’m going to live an honest life!
Come wench, lets not tarry Lets run away and marry -
It’s time I settled down and got a wife!’

Now no-one really knows if the Viking wed his English Rose,
But the romantic in me likes to think its true.
The answer to this mystery is buried deep in history
I know a narnercustard loving Joe – don’t you?
